Hope And Tears Drone in Wavetable

SynthWave Mean Bass in Vital
7 November 2024Hi, Great to see you here!
It’s Halloween so what can be better in sound design world than creating a super disonant and spooky Halloween drone?
I’ve come up with the idea to create a series of videos and tutorials on how to create sound patches in the free Vital synthesizer. Vital is a super powerful tool that has everything you need for sound design. I hope this series will gain popularity! As always, if you have any sound ideas you’d like me to create or recreate, feel free to let me know in the comments below my video, or you can reach out via email.

Here’s a sneak peek at the Vital interface and all the settings I used during the video. This is just the first page; there are also some effects that I’ll introduce later.
The whole creepy, spooky vibe is created using just three oscillators, which are slightly out of tune with each other. You’ll notice that I’ve added FM synthesis to oscillator one, using oscillator two as the modulation signal. One of my favorite techniques is introducing very slow LFOs to move some parameters in both the oscillator page and the effects page.

Here’s a closer look at the settings I’ve made for the oscillators. You can see that some of the oscillators are routed to filter one, while others, including the sample at the bottom, are sent to filter two. I’ve incorporated the sample using the modulation wheel. Normally, when you play a sound on the keyboard, you won’t hear it, but as soon as you move the modulation wheel up, it will come through.

And here’s a sneak peek under the hood in the matrix section, showing what I’ve mapped to the mod wheel, as well as to Macro 1 and Macro 2.

The effects section is also super important, as it introduces a lot of dissonance, distortion, and space with the reverb. Let’s analyze what’s happening from start to finish.
First up, we have a multiband compressor that squashes the sounds and controls the lows, mids, and highs. By default, it’s set to create an effect similar to OTT. Next in line is the reverb, which adds a bit of space, and the key adjustments I made here were to increase the time and size settings.
The third effect is a bit crusher, which gives a crunchy, digital feel to the noise. Finally, there’s a simple filter that cuts off some of the high frequencies to help tame and control the overall sound.
The filter cutoff is mapped to both the modulation wheel and Macro 1, but they operate in different directions. While the modulation wheel opens the filter, Macro 1 actually closes it. I’ve named Macro 1 “the well” because it resembles the sound you’d get if you threw your speakers into a well. Of course, don’t do that!
Okay so head onto the download page, download it and let me know what you think in the comment section of the video.
