Taper 66 – Tape Emulation Effect
10 August 2024Haunting Halloween Drone in Vital
31 October 2024Hi, Great to see you here!
The patch has been inspired by you guys. It clear that you love drones 🙂 Well me too. And I also love wavetable synth which I believe is the most versatile Ableton’s stock synth.
So let’s have a look what I did here.
Drones are in general quite easy in theory but of course making it sound nice is maybe a bit more difficult 😉
In general there are just a few principles to start making a good drone sound:
- Long attack and release so the sound starts delicate and ends delicate
- Evolving parameters like Wavetable position or filter frequency (the more the better)
- Something unstable and unpredictable like assigning random parameter to something… random 😀
- Lots of sweet reverb
Other than that it is just finding a nice wavetable to make it sound nice, finding a good frequency cut-off and adding effects.
What I always want to do with drones and sounds that are long and should be interesting is to add Reverb + Saturator + Reverb. It has a particular effect to it. It will add some reverb obviously and then distort it a bit and the last reverb makes some of the harmonic frequencies pop in a very interesting way. It sounds like a feedback from a guitar which faces the amp. I am still thinking on how does that happen so if you know the physical principle why it is that way, email me 😀
Ok so anyway everything is clearly explained in the video and Here’s the screenshot of the effect I have made during the video.
