20 January 2025Hello Hello
This time I have created a quick video in which I show how to create a simple but very nice Bass patch in Vital.
I’ve come up with the idea to create a series of videos and tutorials on how to create sound patches in the free Vital synthesizer. Vital is a super powerful tool that has everything you need for sound design. I hope this series will gain popularity! As always, if you have any sound ideas you’d like me to create or recreate, feel free to let me know in the comments below my video, or you can reach out via email.

Here’s a sneak peek at the Vital interface and all the settings I used during the video. This is just the first page; there are also some effects that I’ll introduce later.
Now this is very simple and as you’ve seen in the video, I’ve created it all in about 3 minutes.
First we will activate all oscillators and send them all to the Filter 1. All of the oscillators will be slightly detuned from one another. Osc 2 is detuned using just a pitch knob, but the OSC 3 is using the Unison which has 5 voices and just a tiny bit of detuning (6%).
Using Unison on bass sounds is a bit tricky and we can’t overdo it because we’ll get ourselves into a phasing issues quickly.
What it means is that the Sub frequency part of the Bass should be in mono to avoid sound waves canceling each other. That will always lead to a very weak bass. We can leave the higher frequencies spread out a bit so the sound punches through a bit.
Also using an odd number of voices in Unison, leaves one central voice of the oscillated wave and adds sides, whether the even number would just add sides without that central anchor sound.
Also to create that characteristic sound, the most important thing is the filter, which is set to be a “Notch Bend” type. This nicely separates the lower frequencies from the high pitched ones.
Other than that I have not touched any LFO’s and only barely touched the Amp envelope, yet the sound is clearly alive and moving.
Talking about moving, Let’s move onto the effects:

What you see are just three effects.
Multiband compressor gives us control over frequency spectrum, preserving the punch.
Distortion is super important because it adds higher harmonics that will work in the higher registers making sure that the sound punches through the mix even on a shitty headphones or speakers.
And Last but not least, the Flanger that adds a bit more of the movement and space.
After finishing the video I’ve mapped the ModWheel and one macro.
Here are some details but of course these were my choices and you can do whatever you wish with the macros. Also don’t worry too much as you can download the patch using the link below.

Okay so head onto the download page, download it and let me know what you think in the comment section of the video.
