Ableton Wavetable Fallen Angel Pad
19 November 2023Ableton Wavetable SuperSaw Lead Without effects
3 December 2023Hello, it’s great having you here. First a couple of words about the patch:
If you’ve seen the video, you know mostly how I built this device. The Idea was simple:
“Can I make a cool sound in a Drift Synth without touching anything within the actual synthesizer?”
So in other words, can we work with the INIT Patch only? As it shows out, Yes we can.
The main key then is to shape the sound of the raw Init patch so it will have some kind of character.
I have first thought about cutting the nasty high-end as we’re making a bass. For that I have used the Auto Filter as it’s simple and accurate.
Adding a bit resonance will add some character, but don’t be afraid to knock it down to zero. The filter then works similar to the filter that is built in the Drift Synthesizer, but for sure, we need to shape the sound a little bit.
Next I though about “destroying” the sound a little bit. You could use any distortion you like, I chose the Redux to get that glitchy, retro character. Distortion adds some harmonics and changes the sound character a lot.
I was sticking to some medium values as the lower you go with the rate or bits the more the sound “vanishes”.
Next I thought about making sound a bit more wide with two devices. Short Reverb:
Only in this downloadable version I made sure it is scalable with a second clean chain in a group. I have then mapped the chain levels to a single macro, so the more effect you add, the less clean sound you will get, but I didn’t want to completely remove the clean sound.
PRO TIP – You can rename the rack with the Reverb (and Haas) effect and save it as a separate effect rack for later.
Then I’ve did the same with the HAAS effect.
The whole Idea of the effect is to shift timing between left and right ear so it feels like the sound is wider and we can easily achieve this with the Delay effect when we unsync left from right, switch to time mode and set up 2 different for each ear short times like above. Ping-Pong seems to make the effect a bit nicer as well.
In the video I have shown the Haas effect that is a part of a bundle from KILOHEARTS, If you don’t have it, go and check, it has some useful tiny effects that are super simple to use:

The only thing or two I’ve touched inside the Drift synth was:
Changing the Voice mode to Mono, as we’re making Bass sound, therefore we don’t want to have 2 low notes playing at the same time. And then I’ve added the “Thickness” with the slider just below. It adds nice sub wave under the other sounds coming out of the synth. Also the Drift dial is cool to make sound a bit more live. But you can leave it at the default of course.
Then just to control the sound a bit more, I’ve added “Bass Mono” and “Limiter”:
At the very end I’ve created super useful macros for the most important dials:
And don’t forget to click the “Rand” button for some cool sounds too 😀
OK! Here’s the link to the patch i have made during the tutorial:
