Ableton Drift – Lush Strings
10 December 2023Arturia Pigments – Modulating with Noise and Functions – Workshop
24 December 2023Hi, Great to have you here!
That is one hell of a Nasty Beast 😀 A Super Mean Rabid Bass made in Ableton and just a few effects
Just look at these macros! What do they do? Well you’ll pretty much to face the beast, grab it by the… ekhm… device and twist here and there to find out 😀
The sound can fit so many genres and it is also super flexible. Here’s a little look on the Wavetable:
This is super simple, Find a nice Bassy wave, dip it down an octave, cut off some high frequecies, slap an LFO on the WT position. Also add second very harmonic wave like a sawtooth. Then add a 3 voice NOISE Unison which will add that grit and dirt. What starts to be a bit problematic is that with unison the sound polarity goes all over the place.
What does it mean?
Basically if the voice has the same BUT OPPOSITE wave in right and left speaker, it makes sound seem wider. The real problem happens when you try to play that sound through a mono speaker (think of bluetooth speakers, phone speakers, Club sound system). The waves will then cancel themselves out resulting in a very weak or even silent sound. If it happens in the top frequencies, it’s not that much of a problem. You’ll lose some sparkles, but if that will happen in the low-end, You’ll lose Bass, and we don’t want that.
Check the above screenshot of Ozone Imager when the Bass isn’t set to mono. We have the Polar Sample parameter below 0, which means phasing issues.
Bass-Mono to the rescue.
The simples thing you can do is to throw an Utility with a Bass Mono button on, and a bit raised crossover frequency so the Bass portion of Bass stays mono no matter what.
Now when you look at the Imager it looks like that:
Although we seem to have the sound all over place again, the main content of the bass is nicely grounded, nearly at the +1. We are only losing some sparkles in mono.
Then just some Eq to control the rumble and some high end.
And the creme de la creme – Super hard Saturation. This one adds quite a lot harmonics actually messing up a bit the Polarity of sound but hey – we want it mean and angry 😉
And here’s a little look under the hood of the Mysterious Macros I’ve made 😀
